Her cousin in Chennai had sent her a video of flooded streets, the same streets where they&#8217;d played together last summer. Meanwhile, her friend Arav was celebrating because his father&#8217;s tech company just landed a major contract with a firm in Singapore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two completely different realities, happening simultaneously, both affecting kids in the same classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Miss, why does my cousin have to deal with floods while we&#8217;re sitting here planning a school festival?&#8221; Riya asked. &#8220;It doesn&#8217;t seem fair.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before I could respond, Arav spoke up. &#8220;My dad says climate change is making monsoons worse. His company in Singapore is working on water management technology, maybe that could help cities like Chennai?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Riya looked at him, thoughtfully. &#8220;Can we learn more about that? Maybe there&#8217;s something we can do here, too.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watching two students connect a personal crisis to global patterns, listen to each other&#8217;s experiences, and imagine themselves as problem-solvers rather than bystanders; that&#8217;s what global competency really is.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Is Global Competence?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s the ability to examine issues of local and global significance, understand different perspectives, interact effectively across cultures, and take action to make the world better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of it as a combination of four essential capacities:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Investigating the world<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> beyond your immediate environment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Recognising perspectives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> different from your own<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Communicating ideas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> effectively across diverse audiences<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Taking action<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to address challenges and improve conditions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike traditional education, which focuses primarily on memorising facts, global competence equips students with the skills to live confidently and empathetically in a complex, interconnected world.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why Is Global Competence Important?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week, I asked my students where their smartphones were made. &#8220;China,&#8221; one said. &#8220;But the design is American,&#8221; another added. &#8220;And the materials come from dozens of countries,&#8221; a third chimed in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within minutes, we&#8217;d mapped out a global supply chain that touched every continent. By the end of the project, they\u2019d understood that we&#8217;re all connected, whether we like it or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global skills are essential for students&#8217; success in today&#8217;s world. They will work in diverse teams, solve cross-border problems, and navigate situations where cultural understanding matters as much as technical knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/owis.org\/in\/\"><b>best international schools<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adopt the IB framework to prioritise global competencies alongside academic achievement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Four Dimensions of Global Competence<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>1. It means understanding that issues like climate change, economic systems, and social movements don&#8217;t respect borders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it&#8217;s as much about knowing facts as it is about understanding how cultures differ, recognising stereotypes, and challenging misinformation. When students learn about poverty, for example, they explore its root causes across different contexts rather than accepting oversimplified explanations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Skills: Thinking Critically and Communicating Effectively<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globally competent students can:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analyse information from multiple sources<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think critically about bias and reliability<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communicate across cultural differences<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collaborate with people from varied backgrounds<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solve problems creatively when faced with complexity<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They examine different accounts, discuss why perspectives vary, and present their findings to peers who might disagree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b style=\"font-size: 30px;\">3. Attitudes: Openness, Respect, and Curiosity<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of my students recently told me she used to think her way of celebrating festivals was &#8220;normal&#8221; and everyone else&#8217;s was &#8220;weird.&#8221; After a project where classmates shared their cultural traditions, she realised there&#8217;s no single &#8220;normal&#8221;, just beautiful diversity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It requires:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Openness to different ideas and ways of thinking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Respect for cultural differences<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comfort with ambiguity and unfamiliar situations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Willingness to challenge your own assumptions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b style=\"font-size: 30px;\">4. Values: Human Dignity and Cultural Diversity<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Values go deeper than attitudes. They&#8217;re the beliefs that guide how we engage with others and make decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Globally competent students<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> value human dignity above all. They believe everyone deserves respect regardless of background, and they appreciate cultural diversity as a strength rather than a challenge to overcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How Schools Teach Global Competence\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/owis.org\/in\/bangalore\/\"><b>best IB schools in Bangalore<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, students acquire global competency skills through:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>IB Subjects<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When studying literature, students explore stories from around the world and discuss how different societies address universal themes such as justice, family, and identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In science classes, students examine how environmental challenges affect communities differently based on geography, economics, and resources. Make them do the groundwork and help them realise the realities of the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Diverse Collaboration<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We intentionally create opportunities for students to work with peers from different backgrounds. Sometimes there&#8217;s friction, different communication styles, varied work ethics, and conflicting ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that&#8217;s exactly how learning happens. Students discover that their way isn&#8217;t the only way, and that better solutions emerge when diverse perspectives collaborate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global skills for students prepare them to become people who not only tolerate differences but also try to understand them, who don&#8217;t just consume information but question and analyse it, and who don&#8217;t just observe problems but work collaboratively to solve them.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My student Riya came to class upset last Tuesday.
