She climbs into the car, drops her backpack, and slumps into the seat. You turn around with a smile and ask, &#8220;How was school today?&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Fine.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s it. That&#8217;s all you get. You try again: &#8220;What did you do?&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Stuff.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And just like that, the conversation&#8217;s over before it even started.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most parents hit a wall with their kids. Especially with teenagers, when they want to know how their day at school went.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But here&#8217;s what I&#8217;ve learned from talking to teachers and watching my own kids: they do want to tell us about their day. We&#8217;re just not asking the right questions that\u2019d make it easy for them to answer.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Why Kids Shut Down After School<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be fair, even the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/owis.org\/in\/\"><b>best international schools<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be daunting, exhausting, and full of everything a kid would want to get away from.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your child has spent the last six hours being told where to sit, when to talk, what to learn, and how to behave.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They&#8217;ve witnessed friendship drama, worried about scoring well in their tests, and probably felt stressed at least once or twice.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When they finally see you, their brains are fried. The last thing they want is another adult asking them questions that feel like a test.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think about it this way: when you come home from a rough day at work, do you want someone immediately asking you to recount every detail? Probably not. You want to kick off your shoes, grab a snack, and just breathe for a minute. Kids are no different.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, how to ask children about school, you may wonder. The trick is to be delicate and respectful, gently prodding without being overtly intrusive. And to top it off, being sensitive to their emotions.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you check all the boxes, you are the first parent to get your kid talking excitedly about school, instead of literally prying words out of their mouth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Set the Stage for Better Conversations<\/b><\/h2><p><b>Let them breathe first.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> That moment when they get in the car or walk through the door shouldn&#8217;t be interrogation time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greet them with a hug, hand a snack, and don&#8217;t ask for anything for at least 20 minutes. By the time your child is halfway through their banana and crackers, they usually start talking.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Tell them about your day <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">instead of grilling your kids.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I did a similar thing with my son. I started sharing first: &#8220;You know what happened at my meeting today? I totally blanked on a client&#8217;s name and had to fake it for five whole minutes.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suddenly, my son chimed in: &#8220;That happened to me in maths! I forgot what perimeter meant and just sat there hoping Mrs Kumar wouldn&#8217;t call on me.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, voila! The conversations start flowing without you even realising where they began.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Ask Meaningful Questions for Kids to Get Talking<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem with &#8220;How was school?&#8221; is that it&#8217;s too big. It&#8217;s like asking someone to summarise an entire movie in one sentence. Where do they even start?<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&#8217;s how to ask meaningful questions to children about school:<\/span><\/p><p><b>Get specific about their world.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When you know what&#8217;s happening in their classes, you can ask the actual questions:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Did you guys finish that volcano project in science today?&#8221;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;How&#8217;s the new girl who joined your class last week?&#8221;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;What did Coach have you do in PE?&#8221;<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Ask about feelings and moments.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Questions about emotions give kids something concrete to grab onto:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;When did you feel most excited today?&#8221;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Was there a moment when you felt confused or stuck?&#8221;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;What made you smile?&#8221;<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Try the comparison game.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Kids love comparisons:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;If you could trade lunches with anyone today, who would it be?&#8221;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Which was tougher &#8211; the spelling test or the reading quiz?&#8221;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Who in your class would survive a zombie apocalypse?&#8221;<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That last one always gets a laugh and a surprisingly detailed answer.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Questions That Actually Start Conversations<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For younger kids in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/owis.org\/in\/bangalore\/academics\/ib-early-years-programme-curriculum\/\"> <b>early childhood and education<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> programmes<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;What&#8217;s something you made today?&#8221;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Who made you laugh at recess?&#8221;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Did your teacher read a story? What was it about?&#8221;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;What colour was your day?&#8221; This one&#8217;s weird, but it works!<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For older students at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/owis.org\/in\/bangalore\/\"> <b>Bangalore International Schools<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;What&#8217;s something that made you curious after today&#8217;s classes?&#8221;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;If you ran the school tomorrow, what&#8217;s one thing you&#8217;d change?&#8221;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Did anyone do something surprising today?&#8221;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;What would you want to learn more about if you had extra time?&#8221;<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h2><b>The Listening Part &amp; Where Most of Us Mess Up<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You finally got your kid talking. Great! Now don&#8217;t ruin it.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Put your phone down.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We mean, actually down &#8211; face down on the counter, not in your lap. Kids notice when you&#8217;re half-listening.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Stop yourself from jumping to solutions.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When my daughter told me a classmate was being mean, my immediate instinct was to fix it: &#8220;Have you tried talking to the teacher? Maybe you should sit somewhere else.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But she didn&#8217;t want solutions. She just wanted me to hear her. Now I bite my tongue and say things like &#8220;That sounds really hard&#8221; or &#8220;What do you think you&#8217;ll do?&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><b>Don&#8217;t interrogate.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> One or two follow-up questions are fine. Ten questions start to feel like an investigation. If they&#8217;re sharing, let them lead.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>The Real Goal Here<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You&#8217;re not trying to get a minute-by-minute replay of your child&#8217;s day. You&#8217;re building a relationship where they know you&#8217;re interested in their world.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some days you&#8217;ll have great conversations. Other days, you&#8217;ll still get &#8220;fine.&#8221; That&#8217;s okay. What matters is doing it consistently, asking thoughtful questions, and being ready to really listen when they do open up.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep at it.
