International Day 2021

Like every year, International Day was an eagerly anticipated event in the school calendar. To celebrate our core value of respecting diversity, our multicultural student community of 70+ nationalities came to school dressed in the traditional costume of their home countries or the representative colours of their nation’s flag.

In their lessons, students in our younger grades learned how to draw their national flags and sampled the food from other cultures, sent in specially by our OWIS parents. Our Grade 3 and 4 learners put together a special performance that creatively brought attention to the UN Sustainable Development Goals through traditional tales from around the world.

The Flag Parade is always a stirring tribute to the many student nationalities represented at OWIS, and while it was a virtual one this year due to Covid restrictions, watching it was an emotional experience for students and staff. A special note of appreciation for our Secondary student Keira whose vocal rendition of the Singapore National Anthem brought tears to the eyes of many in the school community.

We acknowledge the hard work of the International Day Committee at OWIS Nanyang, led by Rowan Grigoropoulos and Sanhita Roy, for their planning, organisation, creative learning engagements and enthusiasm in making the week such a success. A sincere thank you to Matheu Kieswetter, our Head of Music and Performing Arts, for directing this year’s flag parade and for his guidance in the Grade 3/4 performance. Credit also goes to Ekta Sabharwal, Grade 3 Coordinator, and the Grade 3 and 4 teams for their effort in putting together the performance, and a big round of applause for all the students who performed so well.

Lastly, our thanks to Adrian Deller for organising the International Day festivities at OWIS Suntec, a first at our new campus, and to all OWIS parents at both our campuses for their culinary contributions to the day, which made it even more special for everyone.
