With schools in Singapore having transitioned to home-based learning during this phase of heightened alert in 2021, we have refocused our attention to ensure we maintain our rapport with our learners while engaging with them from their homes.<\/p>\n<p data-w-id=\"cc640971-d1a2-c0ab-f6a1-7a9b2e7312dd\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;cc640971-d1a2-c0ab-f6a1-7a9b2e7312dd&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-post-body-input\">We have taken our enthusiasm for learning and the rapport from our classrooms into our online classes, and our students have responded positively to that. Here are some other techniques we use at OWIS to form meaningful connections with students in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.owis.org\/blog\/how-owis-is-implementing-home-based-learning-hbl-in-2021\" data-w-id=\"036cb8df-76ab-78e8-5c3b-bc3f3c1c2cee\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;036cb8df-76ab-78e8-5c3b-bc3f3c1c2cee&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-post-body-input\">online classes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-w-id=\"5b661765-e483-a43e-005b-af80b92bc451\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;5b661765-e483-a43e-005b-af80b92bc451&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-post-body-input\"><strong data-w-id=\"03cb4f62-cac5-9db1-69ef-fe1002f0ce1e\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;03cb4f62-cac5-9db1-69ef-fe1002f0ce1e&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-post-body-input\">OWIS\u2019 Strategies to Build Emotional Engagement with Students in HBL<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul role=\"list\" data-w-id=\"a30e1ed6-7ada-15e1-6d6b-3313f9645761\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;a30e1ed6-7ada-15e1-6d6b-3313f9645761&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-post-body-input\">\n<li data-w-id=\"a92312dd-a622-76ec-b473-7ab117c0568e\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;a92312dd-a622-76ec-b473-7ab117c0568e&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-post-body-input\"><strong data-w-id=\"a37c5d4f-8095-ce43-b53c-c169aec89cfb\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;a37c5d4f-8095-ce43-b53c-c169aec89cfb&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-post-body-input\">Frequent check-in:<\/strong> We allocate time to meet one student before every lesson to check how they are doing. This is to ensure children get time to talk to the teachers one-on-one, and that we are able to communicate our support to them. I also personally recognise and praise all the work they are doing from home.<br data-w-id=\"LineBreak\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;LineBreak&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-post-body-input\" \/><br data-w-id=\"LineBreak\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;LineBreak&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-post-body-input\" \/>In each Zoom class, we greet each student by name and engage their attention, to continue the\u00a0 familiar morning routine they are used to. We compliment or show interest in minor details, such as a new haircut the child may have got. These might seem like small gestures, but every small gesture counts to make our young learners feel special. We celebrate birthdays and special school spirit days (such as Elmer Day, from the storybooks, which we recognised on May 28).<br data-w-id=\"LineBreak\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;LineBreak&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-post-body-input\" \/><br data-w-id=\"LineBreak\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;LineBreak&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-post-body-input\" \/>We ensure that our students don\u2019t feel like they are just squares in the Zoom gallery to us. They are people who we appreciate, care about and are always rooting for.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul role=\"list\" data-w-id=\"be5ab4ff-4c70-1ead-dc45-02c9b560fb36\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;be5ab4ff-4c70-1ead-dc45-02c9b560fb36&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-post-body-input\">\n<li data-w-id=\"ce45975c-58ab-fc4b-46dd-d00940d17b63\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;ce45975c-58ab-fc4b-46dd-d00940d17b63&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-post-body-input\"><strong data-w-id=\"88ac60eb-bfcf-6636-766c-105d61d19ece\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;88ac60eb-bfcf-6636-766c-105d61d19ece&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-post-body-input\">Respect students\u2019 voice and choice:<\/strong> Like our in-classroom approach, we give <a href=\"https:\/\/www.owis.org\/blog\/encouraging-student-agency-through-differentiated-instruction-strategies\" data-w-id=\"39583785-af4c-8a3d-51a2-6cec0f67edb7\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;39583785-af4c-8a3d-51a2-6cec0f67edb7&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-post-body-input\">student agency<\/a> importance in our online classes as well. For my primary grade, this implies discussing what types of stories they want to listen to or what games they want to play during social check-in time. Online learning requires more focused attention and that can be emotionally and physically draining for students. So our online class schedule always includes virtual games, brain breaks and online dance parties to ensure students have fun virtually and their mental well-being is considered throughout the e-learning experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul role=\"list\" data-w-id=\"c8e7f2a0-0795-11aa-544b-94209c879f0b\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;c8e7f2a0-0795-11aa-544b-94209c879f0b&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-post-body-input\">\n<li data-w-id=\"f8eaf199-e56f-3b69-99f1-019594f5672b\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;f8eaf199-e56f-3b69-99f1-019594f5672b&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-post-body-input\"><strong data-w-id=\"845900da-1eee-1516-6685-eafc2d9f623d\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;845900da-1eee-1516-6685-eafc2d9f623d&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-post-body-input\">Recognising and appreciating student effort:<\/strong> Children should feel appreciated and we need to recognise that they are accomplishing something extraordinary in what is now known as \u201cthe new normal\u201d. Through our school\u2019s digital apps, we celebrate their achievements and their work. We are receptive to feedback from our students and parents and we acknowledge that we are on this journey together.
