How to Pick IB Subjects That Align With Indian & International Universities

High school is a decisive period of life for students as it sets the path for the journey ahead. One of the most crucial decisions to make during this time is regarding what subjects to study. While other boards ask students to choose their stream, the IB curriculum makes it much easier and more flexible for them to choose what they want to study.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP) is a globally recognised pre-university qualification, offering students a wide range of IB subjects to choose from. While this spoils students with choices, it also leads to confusion. A question often arises – “What combination will be best to get admitted into my dream university?” If you have similar questions, then this guide is for you. Scroll down to gain insights into choosing the perfect IB DP subjects that align with your career goals!

Understanding IB DP Subjects – An Overview

The IB DP subjects are part of the rigorous IB curriculum that focuses on developing academic and practical skills in learners. Most IB curriculum schools offer standard level (SL) and higher level (HL) courses that students can take, depending on the requirements of the university they are targeting.

The curriculum consists of three major elements: Theory of Knowledge (ToK), Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). The IB subjects are divided into six major groups. Let’s look at each group below.

  • Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature – Native languages such as English A Literature, English A Language and Literature, Hindi A Literature
  • Group 2: Language Acquisition – A second language such as Spanish B, French B, Mandarin, etc.
  • Group 3: Individuals and Societies – History, Geography, Economics, Psychology, Business Management
  • Group 4: Sciences – Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Systems and Societies.
  • Group 5: Mathematics – Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) or Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI)
  • Group 6: The Arts – Visual Arts, Music, Theatre, Film, or an elective from Groups 1-4.

Factors to Consider When Choosing IB Subjects

Choosing IB subjects can be an overwhelming experience that requires equal parts patience and bravery. It is a decision that you must make after careful consideration and deliberation. Below are some major factors you should consider when choosing your IB DP subject combination.

  • Academic Interests and Strengths – Choose your subjects based on what interests you and motivates you to learn. Identify subjects you are good at and tend to incline towards. Honestly assess your strengths and aptitude, and reflect on the learning style that works the best for you. Choose subjects you are good at or want to be good at, rather than subjects you generally struggle with.
  • University Requirements – Your IB DP subject selection needs to be according to the requirements of the universities and courses you are interested in. Research the admission requirements and process, and understand what subject requirements are mentioned in their guidelines. If you are interested in an international university, make sure your chosen IB subjects are recognised as equivalent to the national curriculum requirements of that country.
  • Career Aspirations – Another aspect to consider is your future career goals.  While it may be difficult to have a definite, long-term plan at a young age, it does not hurt to consider potential career paths and choose subjects accordingly. If your interest lies in different fields, choose an IB subject combination that offers the most flexibility.
  • School Resources and Expertise – Not all IB DP subjects are available at all schools. Ensure the subject is available and the school has experienced teachers with adequate infrastructure. IB DP subjects can be hard, so ensuring you have all the support you need is essential when choosing your combination.

Choosing Between Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL)  Subjects

It is not uncommon for students to get stuck when choosing between Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) IB subjects. Understanding the difference between the two will help you make the right decision.

HL subjects often involve a more in-depth study of the subject matter and require a significant time commitment. On the other hand, SL subjects are often easier and require relatively less effort. It is recommended to take 3 HL and 3 SL subjects to balance things out.

You should also consider your HL subjects based on your skills and interests. Some universities may also require HL-level proficiency, so do your research on that front as well. Since HL subjects require more commitment and effort, ensure you choose them based on your aptitude and needs.
