On 20th March 2025, something special happened at One World International School (OWIS), Sarjapur. A group of DP1 students took the lead, not because they were asked to, but because they wanted to make a difference.
As part of the 1 Million Meals initiative under their student-led program $ocialcred$, they organised a rice and grains donation drive. What started as a simple idea turned into a powerful lesson in kindness, teamwork, and real-world leadership.
A Simple Act, A Big Impact
The students collected and donated a total of 720 kilograms of essential food supplies. This included:
- 570 kg of white rice
- 40 kg each of boiled and ration rice
- 60 kg of biryani rice
- 10 kg of idli rice
- 25 kg of mixed rice and dal
- 20 kg of atta
- 10 kg of ragi
- 378 kg of dal and grains
Every bag packed and every kilo donated was sent to the foster homes run by Dream India Network, a non-profit working with underprivileged children in Bangalore. These foster homes provide a safe, nurturing space for kids who don’t have parental care. The food was used to meet their daily nutritional needs, but the bigger impact was emotional. It gave the children and their caregivers a sense of being supported by their own community.
Student-Led, Teacher-Guided
This initiative wasn’t part of a textbook or homework assignment. It was completely led by the students, with support from two of our amazing teachers, Ms. Tishya and Ms. Aparna, who helped guide the process while letting students take full responsibility.
They planned everything: from communicating with the organisation to packing and logistics. That’s the power of student services at OWIS. We encourage our learners to take charge, think practically, and act compassionately.
Learning Outside the Classroom
We believe that lessons learned through experience last the longest. At OWIS, students are not just taught academic concepts; they’re taught how to live with purpose. That’s what makes us one of the best schools in Bangalore. The IB curriculum encourages curiosity, action, and reflection. And our students don’t wait till graduation to start making a difference. They start now.
Through this project, they didn’t just learn about poverty or food security in theory. They saw it. They responded. And they made an impact. That’s what care and compassion in education look like.
More Than a School
Our aim isn’t just to teach Math, Science, or Literature. It’s to raise individuals who care. People who think beyond marks and ranks. That’s why we’re proud to be among the best IB curriculum schools in Bangalore. Our focus on IB subjects like CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) helps students connect their classroom learning with the world around them.
This event showed how much heart our students have. Their willingness to act, their attention to others’ needs, and their ability to organise something this meaningful- this is the kind of learning that builds character.
For Parents and the Community
If you’re a parent wondering what kind of environment your child will grow up in, know this: OWIS is a school where students learn the value of being human first. We celebrate academic success, yes—but we also celebrate students who show empathy, who take initiative, and who lift others up.
This donation drive was just one example of how our students are encouraged to lead with their hearts.
