English Language Support at OWIS Tsukuba

Industry-Leading English Programmes For Requiring Students

At One World International School (OWIS) Tsukuba, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to thrive in an English-speaking learning environment. Our English language support pathways help students build the confidence, fluency, and academic language skills needed to succeed in an international school setting.

Whether your child is new to English or looking to strengthen their proficiency, our support programmes ensure every learner feels included, empowered, and well-prepared to access the curriculum meaningfully.

At OWIS Tsukuba, We have the following English language support programmes:

1. Academic English Preparation Classes

The Academic English Preparation (AEP) programme at OWIS Tsukuba provides supplementary, in-school English support for students who are still developing the language skills needed to participate fully in an English-speaking classroom.

AEP is designed to support non-native English speakers through personalised instruction, targeted skill-building, and small-group lessons. Students strengthen the essential language needed for classroom learning, including:

Academic vocabulary & subject-specific language

Reading skills & comprehension strategies

Foundational writing skills

Listening and speaking for classroom participation and self-expression

Our goal is to help students transition smoothly into mainstream classes while maintaining confidence and a strong sense of belonging. Progress is monitored closely, and instruction is adjusted to meet each learner’s needs.

AEP Programme Highlights

Interactive Learning

Using immersive learning techniques and activities, we let students enjoy learning in a fun and engaging environment.

Tailored Assistance

Students receive individual attention as we provide personalised support in specific areas that demand considerable improvement, which further makes learning more effective.

Goal-Oriented Classes

The programme is not just meant to strengthen students’ English skills, but it also helps students develop the skills they need to smoothly switch into the regular classes.

Immediate Enrolment Opportunity

We allow students to get enrolled in the lower grades of the school irrespective of their current level of English competency. They can then smoothly switch to the mainstream classes.

Multicultural Environment

Our AEP classes are conducted by international educators, and they include students from multiple cultural backgrounds. This setting makes learning more engaging and holistic.

Evaluation and Feedback

We undertake diverse assessments from time to time to evaluate a student’s progress and provide suggestions for improvement.

How is the requirement for AEP decided?

As part of the application process, students complete an internationally recognized English assessment. Based on their results and grade level, students are placed into one of the following groups:

Above Competency level

Students who meet the required English competency score join mainstream classes.

Primary students below the competency level

Primary students who fall below the competency level receive supplementary English support alongside their regular classes until they can fully integrate into the standard class schedule. There are no pass/fail grades for primary students.

Secondary students below the competency level

Secondary students (Grade 6 and above) must meet a minimum language competency level to enrol. Students who are admitted but fall below the expected competency level are required to take AEP classes alongside their regular grade-level classes.

AEP includes three progressive levels, with placement based on a student’s current ability. Students move up as they complete each level, and after finishing AEP 3, they transition fully into mainstream classes. Most students attend at least one dedicated AEP lesson each day, and the programme is designed to be targeted and efficient, with many students completing AEP within one year.

2. Four-Month Transition Programmes

OWIS Tsukuba offers two Transition Programmes to help students build the English confidence and classroom readiness needed to thrive in an international learning environment. These pathways are designed to support children at different ages and stages of language development, helping them adjust smoothly into English-speaking learning, participate more comfortably in class, and start (or continue) their OWIS journey with stronger communication skills.

  • Kindergarten Transition Programme (April–July): A four-month bridge for children finishing kindergarten in the Japanese calendar year and preparing to enter an English-speaking classroom in August. Students develop early English familiarity, classroom routines, and social confidence in a nurturing environment, so they feel secure and ready for the new school year.

  • Immersive English Transition Programme (year-round): another four-month programme that can be accessed at any time of the year. This transition programme involves ongoing support for students who are new to English, or who need additional language strengthening as they start their studies in international education. Through consistent immersion and structured guidance, students build practical speaking, listening, and academic communication skills, improving their ability to participate confidently in lessons and connect with peers throughout the life at school.

Holistic language acquisition through daily immersive practice

Familiarizing with school routines & inquiry-based education

Social communication and confidence-building

Smooth progression into grade-level academic content

These transition programmes ensure that students can access the curriculum meaningfully, and feel supported from the first day of the acadmic year.

3. Immersive English Transition Programme

Alongside our in-school language acquisition programmes, we offer an after-school Intensive English Club focused on additional practice and confidence-building.

The ACES After-School Intensive English Programme supports students aged 6 and above at different stages of English development, from beginner to advanced. Through small-group instruction, structured lessons, and engaging activities, students strengthen their literacy and communication skills in a supportive learning environment.

These clubs complement our in-school programmes, accelerate English learning, and help students progress through the AEP levels more efficiently, building the language foundation needed to succeed in an international academic setting.

Immersive English Environment

Fostering natural and holistic English Language Development, every day.

Although not a specific programme, in addition to targeted language support, OWIS Tsukuba offers a truly immersive environment that helps students build English naturally throughout the school day:

International faculty

Teachers come from diverse global backgrounds and are trained in international pedagogy.

English as the language of instruction

Core subjects, including Maths, Science, Humanities, Arts, and ICT, are taught in English.

Daily opportunities for authentic English use

Students communicate, collaborate, and problem-solve in English during lessons, group work, and inquiry-based learning.

Multicultural student community

Learning alongside peers from many countries strengthens conversational English and global awareness in an organic, meaningful way.

Our Commitment

Language should never stand in the way of a child’s education. Our English support pathways welcome students from diverse backgrounds, respect their individual starting points, and provide the guidance they need to thrive, both academically and socially.

With structured support, meaningful immersion, and caring teachers, students steadily build confidence, resilience, and a strong foundation in English, preparing them to succeed in an interconnected world.
