5 Ways we promote International Mindedness to our learning community

At OWIS Riyadh, our motto is “One with the World,” and we are dedicated to nurturing international-mindedness in our learning community. International mindedness is an integral part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework, emphasising intercultural understanding, global engagement, and multilingualism. Here are five key ways we promote international mindedness within our school.

  1. Transdisciplinary Teaching

Our school follows the IB framework, which incorporates a transdisciplinary approach to learning. This means that our curriculum integrates various subjects, allowing students to explore concepts from multiple angles. Alongside subjects like Science, Math, and PE, our students also learn French and Arabic, contributing to their understanding of different languages and cultures. This approach fosters a holistic understanding of various aspects of knowledge.

  1. Celebration of Cultures

We believe in celebrating and learning from cultures around the world. Through events like school concerts, International Day celebrations, and International Language Day festivities, our students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in diverse cultures. They get to try different foods, experience various traditional attires, and engage with cultural aspects from around the globe.

  1. Global Awareness in Curriculum

Our program of inquiry includes units that emphasise global awareness. Approximately 50% of the topics we teach are designed to address global issues. Students learn about the world’s problems and are encouraged to think creatively about potential solutions. For example, our Grade 4 students explore global organisations, while Grade 5 focuses on civilizations and government systems.

  1. Diversity of Students and Staff

OWIS Riyadh is a truly diverse community, with students hailing from over 39 different countries. We have an inclusive policy that welcomes students from all over the world. Our teaching staff consists of both English native speakers and educators from diverse backgrounds. This diversity enriches our students’ experiences, creating a small global village right within our school.

  1. High-Tech Teaching and Digital Citizenship

In the 21st century, technology plays a significant role in education. At OWIS Riyadh, we embrace technology as a tool for learning. Our classrooms are equipped with large screens, and our ZeroOne hub offers STEAM lessons to all students. As an Apple Powered school, we prioritise teaching students the responsibilities of being digital citizens and understanding that their digital footprint is real and impactful. We empower them to use technology responsibly.

Our commitment to international mindedness goes hand in hand with the IB’s emphasis on global engagement and cultural understanding.  We strive to prepare our students to be active global citizens who are ready to make a positive impact on the world.
