AEPP at OWIS: A Proven Success in Supporting English Language Learners

The Academic English Preparatory Programme (AEPP) at One World International School (OWIS), which was launched at our Digital Campus in September 2024, has demonstrated outstanding success in its first review cycle.

After a review of the first cohort after the completion of the six month course, 76% of the total cohort met exiting criteria and
18% of whom have exited out of all EAL programming. Their achievements were celebrated at a graduation ceremony held earlier in February.

This innovative, sheltered English language instruction programme, authorised by the Singaporean Government, has significantly enhanced students’ English proficiency and academic achievement, aligning with OWIS’ holistic education values.

What is AEPP?

The AEPP is a specialised English language programme designed to support Secondary students in Grades 6 to 8 who are new to learning English. It provides intensive instruction in English and other academic subjects while fostering essential study skills and self-efficacy. The programme includes lessons in Reading & Viewing, Writing, Listening, Speaking, and Maths, as well as specialist subjects like Physical Education (PE) and Drama. The curriculum also incorporates study skills, such as ‘Learning to Learn’ and ‘Reflections,’ ensuring students develop both linguistic and academic competencies.

Why AEPP?

The sheltered EAL approach at OWIS has been designed to ensure:

  • Improved academic achievement through targeted instruction.
  • Enhanced English language proficiency to help students integrate successfully into mainstream education.
  • A positive outlook towards learning, boosting student confidence and self-efficacy.

Does AEPP Work?

The Cycle 1 review after the completion of the six-month course confirms the effectiveness of AEPP in preparing students for mainstream academic success. The results speak for themselves:

  • Grade 6: 75% of AEPP students successfully met the exiting criteria.
  • Grade 7: 100% of students met the exiting criteria, demonstrating full readiness for mainstream academic integration.
  • Grade 8: 70% of AEPP students transitioned into mainstream EAL programming or exited EAL support completely.

These results reflect the AEPP’s success in equipping students with the necessary English proficiency and academic skills to thrive in an international school environment.

Benefits to OWIS Digital Campus and Nanyang

Introduced at OWIS Digital Campus in September 2024, the AEPP has had a positive impact in multiple aspects.

  • Students who are new to English have gained the confidence to be well-prepared for mainstream classes.
  • The programme has strengthened community integration, with students becoming active, engaged members of the school.
  • Furthermore, parents have expressed high levels of satisfaction, praising the programme’s transparency, the accuracy of testing results, and the professionalism of the AEPP team in supporting their children’s academic and personal development.

The programme has now been introduced at OWIS Nanyang Campus as well.

Looking Ahead

With the success of its first cycle, the AEPP at OWIS continues to stand as a model for effective EAL instruction. As the programme evolves, OWIS remains committed to refining and expanding AEPP to support even more students on their journey to English proficiency and academic excellence.
