Tossing for prosperity, together. 🧧
This week, the whole school at OWIS Newton came together to celebrate a much-loved Singaporean tradition, Lo Hei, as we ushered in the Lunar New Year. With every enthusiastic toss of the yusheng, students and staff shared well wishes for happiness, good health, and success in the year ahead. It was lively, joyful, and just a little messy — the way Lou Hei should be!
The celebrations continued with a trip to the Chinese Cultural Centre, where students deepened their understanding of Chinese customs and traditions connected to the Lunar New Year. From symbolic foods to festive practices, the experience brought cultural learning to life in a meaningful way.
Moments like these remind us that learning about traditions isn’t just about knowledge. It’s about respect, connection, and celebrating the diversity within our community.
Wishing everyone a year filled with joy and prosperity. 🧨✨

In their Unit of Inquiry, our Grade 4 students stepped fully into the role of scientists, using the scientific method to investigate forces and motion.
While testing how weight affects speed, they hit an unexpected snag, cotton string created too much friction, affecting their results. Instead of shrugging it off, they questioned it. Analysed it. Then made a smart adjustment by switching to fishing line for a fairer test.
That’s real scientific thinking.
Students organised their findings into data tables, calculated average times, and worked out speed using the formula: distance divided by time. Numbers started telling a story. Patterns emerged. Hypotheses were tested again.
And just like real researchers, they wrapped up the process by writing scientific reports to present their findings clearly and logically. Not just learning about science—but doing it. Thinking it through. Refining it. That’s where understanding really sticks.

From 爸 to 妈 and everything in between! 🌏✏️
Recently, our Grade 1 learners confidently read a nursery rhyme about family relationships, entirely without pinyin support!
Learning another language is more than memorizing characters—it’s a doorway to understanding different cultures, perspectives, and ways of life. Moments like these nurture curious, open-minded global citizens who can connect with the world beyond their classroom. 🌏💡

From field trip to becoming data detectives! 🌿📊
Last Monday in the Library wasn’t just about reflecting on the EC`s visit to the Singapore Botanic Gardens—it was about turning observations into insight.
Earlier in the day, students recorded their animal sightings at SBG. Back in school, they organised that data into digital spreadsheets and created graphs to represent their findings. Bar graphs. Fractions. Comparisons. Suddenly, those sightings weren’t just notes on a page, they were patterns, proportions, and conversations.
It was fascinating to see how the same numbers could tell slightly different stories depending on how they were displayed. That “ohhh” moment when a fraction makes sense? That’s learning clicking into place.
We then explored digital representations of the Gardens’ flora before finishing with a colouring activity, using references to guide our own drawings of well-known Singaporean native plants. A small detail here, a careful shade there—learning to observe closely makes all the difference.
Nature, maths, and art, all connected in one thoughtful morning.

What happens when students are given the freedom to ask their own questions? Learning goes deeper.
In this reel, Mrs Angela Henderson, Principal of OWIS Newton, shares what she loves most about teaching within the IB Primary Years Programme, the space it creates for curiosity, inquiry, and student voice.
Here’s the thing about the IB PYP. It doesn’t rush students to answers. Instead, it invites them to wonder, to question, and to follow ideas that matter to them. That freedom changes the classroom dynamic. Students aren’t just responding to lessons; they’re shaping them.
Mrs Henderson reflects on how this approach helps learners build confidence, think critically, and take real ownership of their learning—skills that stay with them well beyond the classroom.

How do we share the 🌏 planet, and care for what lives on it?
Last week , our Grade 1students began their new Unit of Inquiry, Sharing the Planet, by exploring resources, where they come from, how we use them, and the difference between natural and man-made materials. The best part? Spotting these examples in their own everyday lives.
The learning took on a creative turn as each child created an 🦧 orangutan, inspired by our recent zoo trip. These are now proudly displayed in the classroom and will continue to play a role in our discussions as we explore responsibility, care, and coexistence.
It’s a lovely mix of thinking and making, connecting big ideas about the planet to something personal, visual, and meaningful. And this is just the beginning.

Last week in Mandarin class, our Early Childhood students took a hands-on path from simple strokes to meaningful characters. By connecting the basics, they’re now recognising and reading characters like 人 (rén), 个 (gè), 大 (dà), 天 (tiān), and 王 (wáng), a big step at this age.
Using building blocks, the children physically pieced together strokes before assembling complete characters. It turned character learning into a kind of visual puzzle. Some even spotted patterns along the way, how 人 appears inside 大, or how adding one extra line transforms 大 into 天. Those moments of realisation? That’s where understanding clicks.
Alongside this, we kept things lively with games focused on animal names, giving everyone a chance to practise speaking, listen closely, and build confidence in Mandarin!

Do you remember your amazement when you watched a 3D movie for the first time? 😍
This week in math, our Grade 1 students worked on understanding the difference between 2-dimensional (2D) and 3-dimensional (3D) shapes. The children learned how 2D shapes are flat, while 3D shapes are solid, have height, and how they can stack and roll as well.
We discussed how these shapes are similar and different, identified their attributes (such as sides, vertices, faces, and edges), and practiced sorting and naming them.

How do little hands learn big Chinese characters? With plenty of play, patience, and plenty of creativity! This week, our EC kids had a joyful, hands-on Mandarin experience, one stroke at a time.
The children revisited Chinese character strokes through engaging activities that helped them recognise how each stroke works and why it matters. Then came the fun part: using different materials to physically build complete 汉字 (hànzì). When learning becomes something they can touch and shape, understanding comes more naturally.
We kept the energy going by expanding our Mandarin animal vocabulary through playful games and activities. Small moments, real progress. This is how strong language foundations begin: confident, curious, and full of joy.

Our modern campus features thoughtfully designed spaces that are student-centric, engaging, and ideal for holistic development — nurturing the academic, emotional and social needs of young learners.
With a balance between academics, outdoor activities, digital learning, and art and music in their daily routines, these little explorers can explore and experiment with the world around them.
A Proven Education Approach
Just like our OWIS Nanyang and OWIS Punggol campuses, OWIS Newton follows an inquiry-led approach that encourages curiosity and critical thinking. Students build essential skills like collaboration, creativity, and communication from an early age in our preschool and primary school classes.
Additionally, we believe that holistic development in early childhood is crucial to nurture well-rounded individuals, which is why we expose students to different disciplines beyond academics, such as music and physical education.
Educators Who Care
Our passionate and experienced teachers are committed to bringing out the best in every child, providing personalised attention and fostering a supportive, inclusive classroom environment.
Additionally, they model our school values of kindness, empathy, and compassion, allowing our students to absorb these qualities by example.
Japanese, Chinese and French as Second Language Options
Students at OWIS Newton have the opportunity to choose from Japanese, Chinese, or French as their second language. This will nurture multilingualism and global awareness from an early age.
