We welcomed the Year of the Ox with special celebrations around the school. The campus was decked up in traditional red lanterns to ward off the mythical Chinese monster Nian and to bring good fortune and prosperity for the new year. Chinese New Year couplets or chun lian, written in Chinese calligraphy, adorned the doors. These are meant to welcome the spring season, harmony and prosperity. We also admired the chuāng huā or “window flowers”, the intricately designed paper craft of food and animals.

The students came to school dressed in the traditional colours of the festival. Throughout the day, they learned more about its cultural significance through activities involving Chinese calligraphy, fingerprint painting and learning how to make delicious Chinese dumplings or jiaozi.
