Think about International Day at OWIS Nanyang, and the vibrant flag parade, the cultural exhibition and the colourful traditional costumes worn by students and staff alike immediately come to mind.
But what does this day that showcases our school’s diversity really mean for the different members of our community? How do students feel when they march in the flag parade? How do school leaders feel when they see the sea of colours of the flags and costumes all around them? How do parents feel when they get this opportunity to share insights into the culture of their home countries with the curious minds all around them?
This year’s International Day at OWIS Nanyang presented an opportunity to get a deeper understanding of its significance.
As James Sweeney, Head of School, said in his opening speech, “We are all incredibly different. We all have different clothes. We all speak different languages. We all have different flags, but we’re all united by being part of One World International School. We are all here to support each other. We are all here to learn from each other.”
In the words of Coby, our Grade 12 IBDP student, “At the end of the day, it’s a school, so number one priority is education. But with all these different viewpoints and perspectives, it creates such a rich learning environment for the kids here. And with the more holistic approach, it just genuinely feels like a greater experience than being in a school.”
