At One World International School (OWIS) Digital Campus, we are deeply committed to sustainability, striving to achieve the highest environmental standards. We have been awarded the Singapore Greenmark Gold Certification, which recognises our extensive range of sustainability measures. As we look toward a greener future, we are excited to share some of the innovative solutions we have implemented to reduce our environmental impact, aiming for carbon neutrality and a significant reduction in our carbon footprint by 2030.
Harnessing Renewable Energy
At OWIS Digital Campus, we harness renewable energy resources to power our classrooms and hallways. Up to 15% of our energy needs are met by solar panels, significantly reducing our carbon footprint. This forward-thinking initiative exemplifies our commitment to eco-friendly practices and sets a benchmark for other educational institutions to follow.
Intelligent Building Design
Our campus features intelligent external building structures that have resulted in a 25% reduction in total energy consumption for air conditioning. The use of terracotta tiles on our building facade, which last for 75 years, serves as an effective heat insulator, keeping our classrooms cooler and reducing the need for excessive air conditioning.
IoT-Enhanced Sustainable Learning Scapes
Our campus is a prime example of how technology can be harnessed for environmental benefits. Utilising the Internet of Things (IoT), we have created intelligent learning spaces that not only enhance the student experience but also contribute to energy consumption. From smart taps and automated soap dispensers to intelligent toilet paper roll management and ammonia sensors in washrooms, IoT helps us maintain a hygienic, efficient and eco-friendly environment for our students and staff.
Energy Conservation Through Natural Illumination
The design of our learning spaces maximises natural illumination, creating a bright and welcoming environment while conserving energy. By relying on natural light for daily activities, we reduce our reliance on artificial lighting, contributing to significant energy savings.
Comprehensive Water Management
Water conservation is a cornerstone of our sustainability efforts. Our comprehensive water management strategy includes futuristic anti-flooding measures that collect stormwater and release it on a scheduled basis to avoid flooding. Additionally, our campus is ready to utilise NEWater, Singapore’s treated water, for both drinking and non-drinking purposes once it becomes available. This dual strategy underscores our commitment to responsibly utilising scarce natural resources.
Living Green Walls
Our campus is adorned with three large green walls, reflecting our commitment to sustainable practices and climate change mitigation. These living walls not only enhance the visual appeal of our surroundings but also improve air quality within the campus. To ensure their health and longevity, we have integrated a green wall drip irrigation system, simplifying maintenance and promoting a thriving green environment.
Butterfly Sanctuary and Edible Garden
We believe in the power of nature to educate and inspire. Our Butterfly Sanctuary and Edible Garden are unique additions that bring students closer to the natural world while providing valuable lessons in sustainability. The Butterfly Sanctuary, with its carefully selected flowering plants, attracts various butterfly species, creating a peaceful educational environment where students learn about biodiversity.
Adjacent to this sanctuary is our Edible Garden, where students engage in indoor farming by planting herbs and growing vegetables, learning sustainable practices and the farm-to-table approach. These interconnected green spaces not only enhance our campus’ beauty but also serve as living classrooms, fostering environmental responsibility and promoting green living habits.
At OWIS Digital Campus, our green initiatives are more than just practices; they reflect our commitment to sustainability and our dedication to providing an eco-friendly learning environment. As we continue to innovate and implement sustainable solutions, we remain focused on fostering a culture of environmental stewardship within our community.
We invite you and your family to our upcoming Open House and School Tour, happening Monday to Saturday. Experience our sustainable campus firsthand and learn about our innovative educational practices.
