What to Expect From Admissions Assessments at OWIS

Relocating to Singapore can be a stressful process, especially if you’re trying to get your child into a good international school. The more you know about the admissions process, the better. When you’re considering One World International School, a leading international school in Singapore, whether for our school values, academic pathway or moderate fee for premium facilities, you can trust that the admissions team will help you from start to finish: from determining whether OWIS is the right school for you to getting your child into one of our exceptional programmes.

Unless your child is a preschooler, one of the processes that you’ll have to go through when you’re considering OWIS, or any international school for that matter, is the admissions assessments. As a parent, this may make you nervous – but it shouldn’t! Our assessment process helps ensure that your child makes it into the right programme, which will help them to build on their strengths and achieve their true potential.

Let’s take a look at our admissions assessment requirements for different grades. (Please note that these are on a broad-based level and might be different based on your child’s specific case. Please follow the admissions counsellor’s guidelines in such a situation.)

Admissions Assessment Requirements at OWIS

Early Childhood

Early Childhood courses require no assessment unless there is an indication that your child may need learning support. We perform this assessment to ensure that your child gets the personalised support they need to thrive in our school community.

Grade 1 to Grade 8

Assessments for Grades 1 to 8 will determine your child’s suitability for our IB Primary Years Programme in Grades 1 to 5 and Modified Cambridge IGCSE Curriculum in Grades 6 to 8. These assessments help us to gauge their understanding of concepts and whether any personalised or differentiated instruction will be needed in the classroom to fill any gaps and help them to thrive.

  • School progress reports of the previous two years
  • For Grades 6 to 8, assessments are done through age-appropriate Maths and English papers. This is also done on a case by case basis for Grades 1 to 5.

Grade 9 to Grade 10 (Cambridge IGCSE)

Grades 9 and 10 are important in the lives of Secondary school-aged children. Students explore more advanced topics during these grades and the Grade 10 IGCSE examination is an important milestone in their academic journey. Assessments given to students are age-appropriate and designed to assess student readiness for these grades.

  • School progress reports of the previous two years
  • Assessment tests through age-appropriate Maths and English papers

Grade 11 to Grade 12 (IB Diploma Programme)

As an IB School that offers the IB Diploma Programme in Grades 11 and 12, our admissions assessments in Grades 11 and 12 are the most rigorous. At this age, students are deep in their preparations for university or college, and it’s vitally important that they find the right match for their academic needs. To get into the IB Diploma Programme at OWIS, students must demonstrate their academic abilities, speaking abilities, proficiency in four different subjects, and more.

  • School progress reports of the previous two years
  • Assessments in 4 subjects – Maths, English, Science and another preferred subject
  • An interview about the child’s interests, motivation, drivers
  • Examination results (IGCSE, MYP etc.)
  • References from previous school’s teachers

Chinese-English Bilingual Programme (Grades 1 to 5)

Our Chinese-English Bilingual Programme helps students to develop their fluency in both Mandarin and English. Aligned with the IB PYP, this programme allows students to become confident in their Mandarin and English while developing cultural awareness and conversational abilities. Our requirement for this programme includes:

  • School progress reports of the previous two years
  • An informal Interview and/or written assessment

English as an Additional Language Programme

If your child comes from a non-native English speaking background, our specialist teachers can provide personalised and differentiated learning in our English as an Additional Language Programme. This will help learners in Grades 1 to 6 to build their fluency in the language. We gauge whether your child will benefit from this programme through:

  • Assessments through age-appropriate Maths and English papers

For these assessments, parents and children can be assured that they will be conducted in a no-stress environment and are at an age-appropriate level, so no extra preparation is required. Our admissions team will support families at all points of the enrolment process.
