We are so very proud of Mayukh G., our Grade 12 student at OWIS Nanyang who garnered an outstanding perfect score of 45 in the recent IBDP 2024 examinations. (Mayukh also secured 10 A*s in the IGCSEs two years ago.)
We caught up with Mayukh for a quick chat after the results.
What have been the highlights of your learning experience at OWIS Nanyang?
I would say that the highlight of my learning experience here at OWIS would be the independent thinking and inquisitive mindset I have cultivated here. The teachers here have played a crucial role in developing my interpersonal and academic skills, thanks to their friendly and helpful attitudes and their commitment to nurturing students.
The stress-free curriculum I have experienced here has also been beneficial in motivating me to explore my interests and study at my own pace without feeling restricted to traditional school work such as homework.
Are there any study tips you could share with future IBDP cohorts at OWIS for their preparation for the exams?
I would suggest that students try out different study methods and find the one that is best suited to them. For me, making notes and repetitively using them to revise was inefficient and didn’t really work for me as I am not a rote learner.
Instead, doing different types of questions, comprehending concepts and their essence, and also researching related topics that were outside of the syllabus made me well prepared for all the exams.
Another important tip to keep in mind is to stay disciplined in your preparation right before your exams. For coursework such as Internal Assessments and the Extended Essay, do try to start researching topics to avoid time management issues later on.
What course will you be pursuing in your higher studies and in which university?
I will be pursuing Electrical Engineering at NUS. My interest in Electrical Engineering stemmed from my passion for Mathematics, Physics, and some aspects of Computer Science. I wanted to pursue a degree that includes intensive Mathematics and Physics in its curriculum while also allowing me to work on hands-on projects involving computers where I can see the tangible results of my work. The versatile career opportunities available in electrical engineering were a key factor in my decision to pursue this degree.
I chose NUS because it offers a rigorous Electrical Engineering program with numerous opportunities for enrichment and enhancement.
What are you looking forward to in life after school?
I am looking forward to developing both my skills and mindset as I transition into the next phase of my life. I am also excited about the opportunity to contribute to my family and society as I can finally start embarking on my professional journey. Additionally, with the ample time that I will have, I also look forward to pursuing my hobbies and personal interests.
Congratulating Mayukh on his perfect score, a first in the history of OWIS Nanyang, Mr James Sweeney, Head of School, said, “We all congratulate Mayukh on his outstanding achievement. Mayukh’s dedication and passion for his subjects are truly inspiring to all of us. Well done, Mayukh!”
Mr David Swanson, Head of Secondary School, said, “Congratulations on achieving the top score! You have made us all very proud. You are the very first student at OWIS Nanyang to achieve a 45 and so have become an important part of OWIS history. Excellent work!”
